It doesn't matter how your "cheap analogue rig" cost, all that matters is that it has amazed you, I bet it'll amaze you with well-recorded classical LPs as well.

Noise isn't an issue with classical LPs if they've been looked after. I've records from the 1950s that are silent and will stay so if kept clean, the turntable properly set up and the stylus is in good condition.

Some of us here also listen to classical music on shellac - our ears become tuned to the surface noise and edit it out. It's the performance that matters.


There's always been good and bad mastering - once electrical recording came in during the 1920s it's said that some engineers tried to make recordings hotter or recorded an rpm or two slower to make playback "better".

And as Rick says, it isn't us/them - I have a Unison Research CD player which produces stunning sound from my CDs. Analogue and digital can sit happily side by side.
