Welcome to the world of 78s.

Reducing the treble on your pre-amp will reduce the surface noise, but also shuts the music down as well.

Although there's a great amount of variance in 78EQ, to compensate for RIAA it's usually best to turn down the bass and turn up the treble. Experiment with each record to get the best balance - what you should be aiming for is a natural sound that isn't closed in by too much bass.

Yep, you'll get more surface noise, but you'll get a hell of a lot more music. Once you've got used to the surface noise, you may find that once a month is no way enough!
