RE: Lowest possible rumble turntable

Carsten, whatever you choose it has to have variable speed, not fixed 78 - if you're going to the trouble of fine tuning the eq of acoustic records then you will want to play them at the right speed as well.

So I'd go for a lenco in good condition or a KAB SL1200. Possibly outside your price range but I don't think there's anything that will meet your needs within it.

You might be lucky and pick up a used Fons CQ30 belt drive that's variable between 30ish and 100rpm, but changing the belt is a pig as you have to dismantle half of it first. It's an underrated belt drive. I don't know what a Thorens 126 would cost used but they had variable 78 IIRC. Both have excellent rumble figures, some professional transfer engineers used the Fons for CD reissues.

I'd avoid belt drives with stepped pulleys as the larger diameter for 78 will stretch the belt. The Fons and Thorens used electronic speed control.

I also play acoustic records using a combination of eq and prefer to play them rather than make digital transfers. There's something about acoustic records that electrics don't have, except quiet surfaces, and frequency range. They are a window into the past.

It's great when it goes around to make a sound.
