78rpm Classical sets...........

are brilliant and terrible.

Brilliant - treat each side as a recording in it's own right - which is what is it is. It's great for learning a piece of music in detail and they're usually direct to disc as well, warts and all.

Terrible - over the years the albums can disintegrate and records get damaged or broken. I have the 1st set of Wanda Landowska Scarlatti Sonatas, almost perfect records in a perfect album except some rivets holding the sleeves together have rusted allowing a couple of records to slide past them. Luckily there's been no serious damage and I've put the records in new card sleeves.

Buy the albums and transfer the records to new sleeves - but don't throw the albums out if they're in good condition. It's sad that what were once the flagships of many record companies are now seen as almost worthless by many.

It's great when it goes around to make a sound.
