the same happened to my copy of "To Our Children's Children's Children" (Moody Blues) not long after I bought it 34 years ago. There's a scratch covering 3/4 of side one. You can only hear it in the quiet parts and then it's annoyingly loud.
I never replaced the album as any copy I've heard since doesn't sound right without that scratch. CD remasters? No chance. That's the trouble when you buy records when you're still at school - they become part of your life.
I bought all my Beatles albums when I was 18 so no remasters for me. I have to hear my average condition copies for the magic to work. I've also got the original Parlophone Stereo 2x7" 45rpm Magical Mystery Tour EP and book and have never heard the LP - I don't know how the sonics compare.
If you can repair your LP so that it plays I'd hang on to it for the magic.
Sorry it happened to you as well.
It's great when it goes around to make a sound.
