I picked up a Technics SL1200MK2 off of Ebay, which was in nice cosmetic condition - but with a known problem with the drive system. Figured worse case I could swap parts with another cosmetically challenged SL1200MK2 I have here.

It went for a reasonable cost ($26 + $35 shipping). I emailed the seller and asked him to remove platter and dust cover before shipping and sent a link to an Ebay guide on packing turntables. I got back a terse "we pack carefully, it has already been packed".

As predicted, there was a single layer of bubble pack over the turntable (which is almost 30#) - tossed in scant packing peanuts in a reused flimsy cardboard box. Shipped parcel post (seller listed priority mail).

Yup, platter was not fastened down - came loose. Guess what happened next :) Base is scratched, dustcover smashed and tonearm destroyed. Seller refused to make any adjustments, and turns out didn't ship the item himself.

Ironically it would have been an easy repair (AN6675 is DOA).

Thankfully I paid using Amex thru paypal and AMEX issued a chargeback at my request. I'm still awaiting the final outcome. Yet another reason to always fund paypal thru a credit card.
