RE: Cactus Cowboy & Others, Shure V-15 III VS. Stanton 500

It's horses for courses here as LPs and 78s are different animals. 78s need heavier VTF for a start. So you need a dedicated cartridge for each type of record, the V15III is superb for LPs and the 500 is superb for 78s.

As your arm has a detachable headshell you've got the easiest solution = separate headshells with a V15III for LPs and Stanton 500 for 78s. The Stanton is shallower than the V15 so you'll need to add shims to keep the VTA right and the bonus is that the shims will add weight to bring the tracking up. If done right the only thing you'll have to alter when changing headshells will be the anti-skate.

If you just use one cartridge, continually changing styli from LP to 78 will wear the cartridge internals. I used to do this and one day the metal can parted company with the plastice body, result: one damaged stylus and LP.
