Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

25 years ago I had the same problem...

and it was easily solved - a retip of an LP stylus.

Like you, I had a Rega RB250 arm, so headshell changes were not an option. I was running an Arcam P77 cartridge and contacted the Expert Stylus Company in the UK.

What they said was that any LP stylus assembly can be retipped for 78s provided it's rugged enough to withstand tracking forces of 3 grams and above and the Arcam could.

I believe the Shure N78S stylus fits your M97xE (IIRC Shure says it does), the N97xE stylus is too delicate for 78 work. Don't buy a M78S cartridge. Another option would be to get a NOS N97B stylus retipped - this will need slight surgery to the plastic to fit your cartridge body.

If the combination works you can improve the N78S by getting it retipped with a better 78 tip from one of the specialists - search the archives here for more information.

So if you're happy with the M97xE that's the way I would go.

If you get bitten by the 78 bug then you may want to get a phono amp with a mono switch and differing EQs, as 78s were cut differently to most vinyl.

Enjoy your records!
