This might sound weird but look for Reader's Digest Boxed sets, because many were recorded by Decca in the UK for RD in the 60s and were very well performed and recorded. I can't speak for any US recorded RD sets, they may be very good as well - I've not had the chance to hear any.
I don't know how much they sell for in the US but they can be an easy way into the more popular works at reasonable cost.
You can discover what you like and then start looking for other interpretations and or works by the same composer. It can be cheap as well.
Classical music is like any other, jazz, rock etc. Being an awkward SOB I often have to listen for myself before agreeing with other people's recommendations. Usually I agree with them, but not always.
There has been and still is a lot of snobbery about classical music. Ignore it and explore the music. There's a lot of emotion and enjoyment to be had.
Good luck.
