I don't know if this helps, but remember that the original SME had to cater for 78s as well and they can go a lot further towards the centre.
BS1928 of 1955 as quoted by Percy Wilson has the following:
Diameter of inside groove: 4.75" (33rpm) 4.25" (45rpm) 3.73" (78rpm).
Percy Wilson's and G W Webb's calculations were first published in 1924. Reading through the 1929 edition of them I can't see a definitive recommendation (unless I've missed the obvious) but there are tables and diagrams showing you how to calculate errors for given lengths of arm.
I've abandoned SME headshells in my main system and substituted slotted ones. They sound better and alignment is a lot easier, once set up you can swap out cartridges without having to reset the sliding base every time.
