Most LP or CD transfers from 78s will have had some filtering or other treatment. Some are good. Many are awful. The problem is not usually the transfer engineer but post production to make the recording acceptable to the public.

Many record companies appear to feel that hiss and noise must be totally removed and quite often add reverb or prcessing to bring the recording "alive".

If you want to hear historic performances then you have to accept that complete noise removal usually results in a poorer rendition of the performance, with the life sucked out of it.

Is it the hiss that causes you problems? Maybe processing has been added so the hiss now has echo as well. I usually find it irritating and fatiguing.

If the performances you quote matter to you, and they were available on 78, consider going down that route. You'll be at least two steps nearer the original performance. That can make a real difference.
