RE: 3009 Series II Improved fixed headshell alignment

The SME3009II Improved / Shure V15III were made for each other and the SAS stylus improves the cartridge considerably.

The major limiting factor with the SME Improved is the headshell, which is flimsy and the low mass. As the headshell is fixed there's not a lot you can do without surgery. I'm running a series 2 SME3009 with a V15III/SAS on a Garrard 401 and the combination is superb, I've changed headshells though.

I'd stick with the V15, but if you want to change look for low mass, low VTF moving magnet cartridges that track at no more than 1.5grams. IIRC there aren't many modern ones that suit the SME Improved. Back in the day, the Stanton 681EEE was the other natural partner for the SME and it is still available, others may disagree.

If you want a modern cartridge the Shure M97xE comes to mind, but I think the V15III/SAS combo beats it hands down.
