Late response to Olly's Post on Lab 80 problem below...

Hi Olly,

If the turntable refuses to turn when pushed by hand then it's possible the auto function is engaged and the cam has jammed at one point - or it may just be the grease has solidified. The cam is fabricated and less forgiving than the cast ones found on lesser models.

If you turn the unit over you should see the underside of the cam and the eccentric track. There is a lever with a wheel attachment which traces the track like an oversize stylus. This has probably jammed and needs freeing and lubricating. Be very gentle with it, if you force it you could damage the outer teeth and lose the auto function completely.

The Lab 80 is quite a complicated beast, with 18 grease, 8 oil and 3 damping fluid points listed in the maintenance manual. Even in good condition the idler and platter have a hard time driving the auto cam round during the autocycle, it usually slows down, particularly playing 45s. The Lab80 and mkII didn't last that long in production because of the over-complication, which is a great shame. An occasional lube and grease of all moving parts (except the auto-trip) should keep it working.

Hope this helps.
