RE: what is "wrong" with this model garrard

hmmm.. I use a LAB80mkII every day, as an secondary single-play auto turntable. It works best with medium to low compliance cartridges, although I've heard of people using the Shure M91ED which IIRC has a VTF of 1.5grams.

I've had mine for 25 years, and at one stage ran an Audio Technica MC in it. These days I alternate between a Pickering 380A and Shure M55E.

Other than servicing all I have done to it is build a multi-layer MDF base for it which has made a difference.

It is a shame to strip off the arm and all the auto functions as this TT was styled rather than just engineered. It is also one of the best vintage auto turntables. With a deep cartridge and a Garrard plastic tilt wedge you can actually get the VTA just about right as well.

For my money I'd build a large heavy base and add a second arm. Several people have done this, there are pics of one at the Vinyl Engine. That auto function can be very useful at times.
