"Amazingly, every early stereo vintage cartridge, in proper working order, still has sonic merits"...

indeed it does. As I type this I'm listening to Lee Ritenour on a Lenco 88/SME3009II/Shure V15-II&SAS into my mono system. I recently sorted out the cartridge loading in the pre-amp and have become more rigorous in setting alignment VTF, and VTA in this system. Every now and again I have to stop to listen - something else has popped out of the speaker I haven't heard before.

Other older cartridges I use include the Pickering Stanton 380A and Shure M55E. Older broadcast cartridges like the Shure M44 and Stanton 500 are still the among the best for archiving 78s.

And I suspect my Ortofon MC25FL downstairs is a direct descendent of the SL15.

Could it be there is very little that is new in the cartridge world, other than the materials used?
