Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

FWIW I think it may be better to use weights than just relying on arm adjustments -

you then have a variable mass system to match cartridges better, I'm getting good results from using different types of headshell in an SME 3009II.

I was using SME S2R headshells, however they have fixed cartridge mounting holes and are also very light which wasn't great for tracking 78s at 4-5 grams. Using them for vinyl was OK on cartridges that track at 2 grams or under.

So I've changed over to Sumiko headshells for 78 carts, and Yamamoto wood for vinyl. The Yamamotos are much lighter than the Sumikos especially the Boxwood type which I'm using with a Shure V15III/SAS.

The improvement in sound is significant on both 78s and LPs, I'm getting much more detail and the frequency range has extended at both ends. The Yamamoto is slightly heavier than the SME.

Some of the improvement may be due to the superiority of the Yamamoto and Sumiko shells, but I think the mass has a lot to do with it. They're also cheaper than SME - the Sumiko is less than half the price.
