Being a smartass I avoided using any compression, thinking it was all rubbish, but if I were starting again I would use Lossless.
In my main system there's a dedicated laptop connected via a Midiman Flying Cow DAC/ADC, when I connect the iPod (60GB photo), and play it via iTunes through into the system the sound is astonishingly good. As the music is already on the PC's hard drive, uncompressed, there's little point in doing this.
I don't use the iPod much now - it's been in the drawer for a couple of months, but when I do I use Sennheiser PMX100s.
So long as your vinyl source is good Lossless should be fine for mobile use. Have fun.
