I have two 3009/IIs in daily use, neither have grommets - although I've a new set still in the wrapper.
There appeared to be a lot of play in the main bearing of my first one which I bought used, unboxed, 13 years ago. I called SME about this and they said that there is some play in older model 3009 bearings. So I bought a new 3009R bearing and armlift for it (not cheap) and later a new headshell socket. The finish on the 3009R is different, so the arm no longer looks original.
The other one is stock, built from parts, well I had this bearing and armlift spare. It's playing Tracy Chapman right now, Lenco G88/Shure V15II/SAS into my mono Leak / AR system.
There's play in the bearing and the knife edges, so I figure that using grommets adds more wobble to the whole thing. That's my theory.
I might be wrong.
