I used to have one to re-eq for 78s and early LPs, and yes it did...

degrade the sound, but at the time I had no alternative. At least I could switch it out of the tape loop.

I understand your dilemma. If you had an arm with detachable headshells I'd suggest you get a cheaper cartridge with a conical tip to play the affected records.

If they are worn, and not particularly valuable in terms of both money and sentiment, it might be cheaper to replace them than buy an equaliser or change any equipment.

Just one thought, are the affected records thinner than the unaffected ones? It might be VTA.
