There are plenty of places to find out their history but to answer your question:
yes, they really are that good, but you can get better used for the money.
What keeps prices up is threefold:
1. The name and reputation
2. Build quality
3. Parts availability - although now mainly used. SME still manufacture and sell a few parts that will fit early 3009s.
I have two 3009/IIs. I like them as they are versatile and easy to use and set up but there are better, more modern arms out there.
