between the rotating motor and the rim of the tt platter, usually by a spring. Saying it is easy, doing it properly is more difficult, spring tension and idler (rubber) wheel construction and integrity are critical factors.
It's also called rim drive and came into use during the 40s, although there may have been earlier examples.
As they've been out of mainstream hi-fi for decades the cost of tooling up, compared with belt drive, probably outweighs against them for the moment.
I love them. Other members of the family have belt drives.
