Are the ones you heard digital transfers? Often 50s and 60s transfers can be pretty good...

and I am suspicious of many Digital Transfers.

The transfer engineers do a good job, it's the post transfer cleaning and enhancements that screw the re-issues up.

I've got the Appassionata on the original UK 78s. They were pretty good recordings for the 30's - I assume at Abbey Road with Fred Gaisberg in attendance. If you have the inclination and space, going back to the original direct cut 78s is really the only way to go.
