I have a similar problem with a Leak Mono Varislope pre-amp / TL12 plus power combo.....

it does depends on how much gain there is in the pre-amp section. Leak put a trimming pot on the input so you can go from a medium output stereo MM to a monster 78 head with steel needles at a turn of the control at the back.

Many mono MM carts produced when your console was made had an output greater than modern stereo ones.

FWIW I've tried several MMs with the Leak and got varying results.

The highest output came from a Pickering 380A, but at the expense of high tracking weight. Sound is nice though.

Shure M3D, great, but like the Pickering 380A it tracks too heavily for my best LPs, retipped for 78s it's a killer.

Stanton 500 / Pickering V15-AC-1 - not enough volts & heavy tracking

Shure M44-7 and M44G produce enough output for the Leak, there are better carts out there, but........the M44C retipped for 78s is a killer, better than the M3D.

I have tried an ADC3 and it was ok, but could be louder.

Shure V15-II and M97xE, Audio Technica AT95E just don't have the volts.

And a real vintage magnetic cart is the Goldring 600 turnover LP/78 mono. Lots of volts, nice sound, not for best LPs though due to it's very heavy tracking weight.

I run two TTs into the Leak - Goldring Lenco 88/SME3009-II/Shure M75ED which for me works perfectly and I'm listening to it now. It's got a Jico / SAS stylus which is far better than the original Shure. The other is a Garrard LAB80-II with a Shure M55E which is a great compromise. Not as detailed as the M75ED but it has plenty of volts.

Hope this helps - good luck.
