Home Vinyl Asylum

Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

Don't forget that many low cost modern integrated turntables...

have a horrendous plastic shanked stylus in a ceramic cartridge, including many USB ones. They might be OK for transferring vinyl to MP3 at low bit-rates, but not if you want to play your LPs again as they'll probably be destroyed. Bit like playing an LP on a wind-up Gramophone.

I ripped the cheapo cart out of my Numark PT01 and put a pre-amp and Shure cartridge into it the day I bought it. Didn't even play a record on it and to hell with the warranty.

Our fellow inmates are right, keep watching this Asylum, there are low-cost ways into vinyl nirvana. Go for the separates route, start with a good used turntable and amp. Reasonable turntables and amps can be got for peanuts to get you started. You can then upgrade bit by bit if you feel you need to and as cash becomes available if it is limited. That's how many of us started in Hi-Fi.

One very important thing. Do buy a new stylus for whatever turntable you get if it's used.

Good luck
