"The " section is indeed large.....

filing by label & cat is a very, very good way to go, even for the whole collection. I have thought about it for my own records.

There was a used record store here in the UK that filed it's stock that way. By 1992 I'd been trying to get a 3-disc 78 set of the Moeran String Trio for 17 years and knew the cat numbers, Columbia DX1012-1015, by heart. When the owner told me of his system I went straight to the Columbia DX1xxx section, and there they were, mint condition! Absolutely true.

In the past few years I've limited my collection to about 4000-4500 and taken the overspill to charity/thrift stores. We haven't the room for more and many never got played at all. Every year or so I methodically re-audition any records (and CDs) that I'm not familiar with, or feel that are no longer of interest to me and dispose of those that fail to pass. The churn rate is about 200-300 in and out in a year, 300 went earlier this month.

If I had 20,000 items I think I'd be more inclined to categorise, with an extremely diverse taste in music and speech it's better for me to lump them in together.

My wife has her own record and CD collection (and system) in our dining room. The decision to keep them separate from the start of our marriage was a good one, my order drives her mad and her chaos, although much smaller than mine, does the same to me, especially her CD overspill into the bedroom. Although after 27 years our marriage is still very strong, the record collections never met and will stay separated.

I appreciate your comments and hope you get what you need from your system.

Richard
