Home Vinyl Asylum

Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

I have just one spreadsheet with...

no categories or genres except if it's vinyl or shellac and the size, which makes it easier to find. (Not forgetting DVDs, VHS, CDs or Cassettes.)

The order of listing is Composer (by surname) or Artist (by first name) or Album Title if it is a compilation, and if the title starts with "the" it's filed under T. Where there's more than one composer, I list it under my favourite piece on the record. I also list the date and place I bought it, and what I paid.

The records themselves are kept like that as well and it's good fun if I don't know what to play, sitting next to Carcass "The Reek Of Putrefaction" is Carvalho, João De Souza "Overtures and Keyboard Music". The Carpenters have been banished to "T" and Kim Carnes to "K".

The sequence of columns is:

Media Type: Composer Artist Or Title: Title Or Side A Title: Side A EQ/Stylus/Speed: Side B Title: Side B EQ/Stylus/Speed: Artists: Label: Catalogue No: Date: Cost: Notes:

Obviously not every field is appropriate for each record, CD or DVD, but there's enough for most purposes.

Spreadsheets are also good for producing mail merge labels for those plain card 45 and 78 covers. Makes it much easier to find what you're looking for without having to pull loads of records out of the shelves. I also list the EQ, stylus and speed if it's not standard so that the record cover tells me how to set up properly without having to look it up.

It's finding what works best for you. Listing by spine lable is also a good idea.

File Fireworks under Fireworks, with the second column listing the composers and the next the artists.

If you dump the idea of genres, Gershwin is a breeze, as is the Symphony for Glenn Miller.

Good luck.
