get an arm with interchangeable headshells and a stereo cartridge. You be surprised how good stereo software on high quality mono hardware (cartridge excepted) sounds. Old mono cartridges tend not have sufficent vertical movement and could wreck your stereo records.
If you only use a mono cartridge you limit yourself to not being able to play all your records on both systems.
I have a CD, Cassette & DVD player plugged into my 1961 Leak mono system. As well as a Lenco 88/SME and Garrard LAB80II. I don't use mono cartridges as I switch between stereo and mono all the time. I also play 78s with retipped stereo cartridges. You can still get depth and spaciousness. Bass lines come through very well.
