Headshell no problem, ball bearings problem..

Turntable experts have an nos M8 headshell and the arm socket and wiring loom available buy-it-now on ebay. It's worth replacing anyway.

If the thumbwheel that holds the headshell on is missing then you'll need to find a set screw and large washer that fit. It looks like the black plastic VTF thumbwheel but is steel (I think).

Yes there are ball bearings in a cage. If the cage is there and the balls aren't you'll need to find some that fit. You could try a scrap Garrard changer. In later Garrard cages the balls were captive,in the LAB 80 they fall out. There are five balls, part no.43201 (why am I quoting this, they're not available).

The only spare parts Garrard held in 1982 for the LAB80 were idler wheels, I bought one then. There ain't any now, unless you come across NOS. Unless the rim is damaged give it a dry clean and try it. Otherwise there are cleaners about, I've never tried one though. I don't have any spares, and I suspect I didn't need to change it at all.

The ME91 is a later addition and is a bit optimistic. Maybe the glued on headshell is either cos the delicate pins are broke, or they tried to reduce mass. Personally I go for the former.

Found my LAB80II/M55E in a junk/thrift shop in 1982. I was fascinated by the wooden arm. I was running a Dual CS621/M95ED as my auto turntable then. I plugged in the Garrard and sold the Dual. I paid a £12 for Garrard. The Dual was 4 years old and cost me £150 new. I still wish I had the Dual as it was a nice table, but where do you keep them all?

Let me know how you get on.
