As pointed out to me by OMalley, many posters are looking for an easy answer, and I certainly don't blame them. But, like anything you're involved in, it takes time to develop a "philosophy" about it.
For example, the Linn philosophy of starting at the very front of the food chain, having the very best you can there, makes the most sense to me. Munkie puts the phono preamp ahead of the table, arm, and cartridge. To me, this says that a Kenner Close 'n Play into a Manley Steelhead will work better than a VPI rig into a cheap* phono stage. That hasn't been my experience, but you get my point of garbage in, garbage out.
If someone would write the FAQ's and include the various views on the subject, and people new to vinyl are open minded enough to understand the dichotomy of opinion, then it may be useful.
