Monos on single channel mono systems are terrific, Peggy Lee's Black Coffee or the Dudley Moore Trio are sooooo good. Garrard Lab80/M55E / Leak Varislope III/TL12+ / AR4XA single speaker.
Stereos on a mono system are also terrific, Janis Ian's Revenge, Reiner conducting the Pines of Rome or Ellen Allien's Berlinette via a V15II or M97xE/SME3009 / Lenco 88 into the Leak. Voices come right at you, the bass and rhythm shake the walls and the detail is all there. 78s are good too.
I just put the system together on some solid wall shelves in the corner of an 8'x8'6" room, the speaker is 6'6" off the ground in a corner, and it just worked from the start. I can't figure out what I did right without trying. I spend more time listening up here than I do on my main system. (CDs sound pretty good too via a dropper resistor).
Yeah yeah they're stereo carts. But I don't care, the sound is awesome.
