Hmmmm........

SP for Standard Play 78, or green coloured styli and
LP for Long Play Microgroove, or red coloured styli?

Until the RIAA standard (in the UK BS1928:1955) in the mid-fifties I guess that each company had potentially a different cutting tip, after all, EQ wasn't generally standardised until then.

In the early days of 78s, some engineers allowed the tips to wear down. The specialists might tell you 28mil for a certain company in that year, but for "that session" you gotta use 35 or 40mil 'cos the cutter was blunt.


My technical spec data articles are packed away, but I'm sure the 1950 spec in respect of the cutting tip is similar or the same to ones I've seen for later in the decade.

For all the theorizing - experiment yourself and if it sounds better it must be right!
