It's not the width, but the depth that mattersMono and Stereo groove widths are the same

Reading technical articles from the late fifties none of them say there is a difference between mono and stereo groove width dimensions.

What they do say is that is that a 5mil tip was needed for stereo when each channel has an upward cut reducing the depth of the groove. This could throw a 1mil tip out of the groove.

Experience showed that a 7mil was a useful compromise and didn't pick up grunge from the bottom of the groocve. It was also said to be better at tracing high frequency signals in mono grooves.

A mono groove should have a constant depth, which is why a larger tip fits well but it cannot cope with the pinch and "hill and dale" of stereo.

I seem to be pissing against the wind here, has anyone actually seen a set of different specs for mono and stereo groove widths, or is it really an urban myth?

Please prove me wrong.
