I toyed with cutting down an Audio Technica AT1005 arm, but it wouldn't have fitted under the lid - I checked.
I also toyed with fitting a Garrard idler drive to replace the crappy belt and motor, I have a couple of spare SP25 and LAB80 motors - they're too big.
A conical Shure securely tracking at 3 grams (I've just checked it - I did the mod 3 years ago and was speaking from memory) probably exerts the same or possibly less pressure on the groove walls than a line-contact point tracking at half the weight. So wear isn't an issue.
The only items I bought new were the battery tray and LP and 78 styli, the rest is all from the parts bin and the mods produced a significant improvement. But it still ain't Hi-fi.
The alternative is to mod a Sound Burger to play 78s..........
