These tables, like many USB ones have a ceramic cartridge with a plastic shank. Not good news.
I ordered my Numark PT-01 unseen. When it arrived I thought - great idea - crap cartridge. So I tore it apart on the day it arrived, performed surgery on the arm, installed a battery powered RIAA phono pre-amp inside and Shure M55 cartridge. The power switch is DPST but only one side is used, so it now controls the pre-amp as well. I also put in a PP3 battery tray so that you don't have to strip the deck to change the battery. I re-balanced the arm by hot-glueing on Garrard weights at the end so it will track N44-7 LP and N44-3 78 styli at 3-3.5 grams. Forget VTA and alignment, I did it by eye as best I could - the cartidge is glued in.
Sound? Well it means I can play used vinyl and shellac I buy when away from home in my hotel room without having to wait to get back. And that's why I bought it.
Have fun.
