A proper phono stage for your 78s will make a difference -

even for casual listening. I know KAB make a archivist phono stage, but here in the UK I have a Danish Elberg MD12mk2 Pre-amp (about £1k/$2K). I couldn't believe the difference moving from a graphic equaliser to the Elberg made. It's user friendly and meets your need for a single unit as it has 4 LP curves as well as 8 78 ones, + some fine tuning with filters.

I have a soft spot for the FONS CQ30 as it was my first serious table back in '76. But it is a pig to change the belt as you have to dismantle the sub-chassis. Still, the first one lasted 14 years. The speed did tend to drift as well. I think that some US-based commercial transfer engineers use them.

My brother has it now for his 78s and it's still a great deck. I just love Garrards and Lencos!
