Re: Linn LP-12 - synergistic arms, and reliability?

Hey:
David said:
"Comments I read suggest the cheaper Linn arm is no good with MC's, and the the other Linn arm is super
pricey. What other arms (other than the Rega's and derivatives) are a very good match for the Linn without
breaking the bank?"

The Akito I was a bad match for LO MC's and was designed for
MM carts. The Akito 2 is built in Scotland and has higher Spec
bearings you can differentiate it by it's black pebbeled finish
and is said to work well with MC's albeit @ a higher cost than the
I. Though I've heard reports of folks using HO MCs on Akito I's
just fine.Go figure.

The Ittok LVII is the best buy used and was made for a longwhile with
minor changes all the way up to the LVIII/2 which is said to be
identical to the Ekos and rare(I've never seen one). LVIII's aren't
to common here in USA. Try to find a LVII with the one piece counterweight if possible as this is the last version. Good arm;
still rated better than the both versions of the Akito. As long
as ones sensible with the Ittok it's hard to wreck one though there
are some chimps out there:) Many of Linn's precautions with their
tonearms seems mainly to cover their butt's in terms of warranty.
The LP12 manual and faq has an arm bearing test(been posted here as
well). The Naim Aro and Linn Ekos are both great but a big hit $
wise. Don't care for the Rega arms on the Linn myself YMMV.

"Are the latest model LP12's reliable,"

Yep, with the up to spec springs ect. and proper setup they'll hold
a long time especially on a good wall shelf and aren't moved around
every other day to try some "trendy" tweak et al. If it's a pre
1993 table the Cirkus kit is the way to go as you get all new
essential internal parts(springs ,grommets, bearing, innerplatter).
It's worthwhile to have a dealer set the table up if don't feel
DIY confident. Ask if you can watch and ask irritating questions:)
Some people get overly anal about this stuff as I've heard LP12's
with less than perfect setup play fine. But then the is HiFI were
talking about right...
All said and done it's a very good record player that communicates
MUSIC if you like that sort of thing.

There a 4 versions of the LP12 in the USA
Basik/60hz motor run off wall AC
Valhalla/50 hz motor with Valhalla board power supply mounted in
table plinth
Lingo/50hz motor outboard Lingo (Crystal-quartz)powersupply
Naim Armageddon/60hz motor Naim power supply uses a 500 VA
torroid and some caps to drive the motor.
