RIAA only came in round '55. I'm not aware of differing groove sizes.
1. The "standard" stylus size for early monos is .0010" diameter.
2. Stereos were .0005" but .0007" is now the standard - it sits higher in the groove and picks up less noise - and will cope with most monos.
You will need specialist retipping / cartridges, or you could try to find the following genuine Shure M44 styli NOS:
N44-5 .0005"
N44-1 .0010"
N44-3 .0025" for 78s if you have any (there are after-market equivalents)
and the following are still available:
N44-7 .0007"
N55E .0007" elliptical.
If the records are all good you might try a .0011"x.0003" elliptical for monos (will have to be a retip).
You'll need a new phono pre-amp with extra EQ as well.
A good place to start is http://www.kabusa.com.
Don't get hung up about this - if your records sound good on your current set up leave it alone and enjoy the music 'cos there is a law of diminishing returns to get that last extra detail.
Good luck
