For several years (beginnig ~ 2000) I enjoyed an RB250 fully mod'd by Origin Live (with Expressimo counterweight, Michell VTA adjuster ring, & DV20xl) on my GyroDec mk V. When I replaced the cart., I realized I sought more finesse, texture, air. I had always recognized that while the RB250 was a very good value and performer, it rendered a certain lack of definition, limitations at the frequency extremes and "apartness" that could not be attributable to the carts I used.
A few months ago I installed an Origin Live Encounter mk3. I am very happy with that decision. Comparing the RB250 to the OL Encounter using the same cartridge I experienced acoustic performances as rendered with more textures, more air, and more presence; in fact a lot more of everything I sought. It seems as if the arm provides a more "rock solid" platform to allow a cartridge to do its thing [obviously if it were actually rock solid, the sound would be terrible]. The differences between the RB250 and Encounters were not subtle. If you can see your way to pay for the sightly more costly Encounter mk 3 over the Techno arm, I believe you would conclude as I do that it greatly surpasses the competencies of the fully modified RB250.
