US tables are 78.26rpm on 60hz, UK & European 50hz just under 78. It's to do with the strobe lights and maths I think.
Most recordings after 1930 standardised on "78". Up to then, even the reputable companies had their moments.
If you play older records don't worry too much. If it sounds right it probably is.
Even modern CD transfers don't always get it right.
