Why remove the bottom plate from turntable bases?

I've seen this mentioned many times as a tweak...removing the bottom plate from a turntable base and either ditching it entirely or replacing it with a heavy piece of wood. What is the purpose of this modification and in general, what is the overall sonic benefit? On one hand I can understand how it would make for less internal resonance eliminating the 'guitar body' effect, but I can also see how it would reduce overall mass and structural rigidity and perhaps the resonance of the entire system would be affected?
