Thanks for all of the info. You certainly know Empire tables!

I've checked the link to Turntable Basics and see that they list 2 different belts for variations of the 598 III. From the model numbers it looks as though one is 25.75" unstretched and the other is 31.5" unstretched. A rough check with a string suggests a stretched length of about 33" on my table. I've emailed them for more info.

From Mark Kelly's post above, it appears that belt thickness matters but I haven't yet followed the thread he suggested.

Re oil
I see that your recommendation is different from that in the Empire manual. They recommend against putting oil into the bearing well but I'm not sure why as it seems to be normal practice for most turntables. I'm guessing that it has fairly close tolerances which would fit with both their recommendations and the relativelky low viscosity oil that you use.
