EQ was there from the start of electrical recording

Only Acoustically recorded 78s and cylinders have no EQ, so using no EQ will remove the bass totally. The Westrex system used by Victor (HMV) and Columbia from 1925/6 had bass attenuation from 200hz. Other systems varied but 200hz is a good starting point. Later EQs took the bass attenuation upwards (apart from UK Decca who used 150hz, which is why - uncorrected - they have very heavy bass) RIAA has bass attenuation from 500hz down. Middle C on a piano is 256hz so the EQ affects a critical part of the audio spectrum. Don't get too hung up on getting every available EQ there ever was - most variations were from the late 30s thru to RIAA - a few basics, Westrex, RCA, NAB and flat - Decca ffrr and EMI if you have any records of European origin from 1930-55 - will do. Oh and RIAA! Russell Fishers article may help.
