You inspired me to see what I have and compare them.I found the following:
Van Cliburn on RCA LSC 3147 (Canadian pressing)
Maurizo Pollini on Seraphim S60066
Bella Davidovich on Philips 9500 889
Peter Frankl on Turnabout TV-S 34473
Martha Argerich on DGG 644 106 (in boxed set)Idil Biret on Naxos 8.554540 (CD)
The winner was Peter Frankl on Turnabout. The sonics were superb and the performance drew me right into the music rather than listening to the sound. None of the others came near to doing this for me after I had heard this one
I was really surprised, as I have generally avoided Turnabout records assuming that as a low cost pressing, they would not be great. I probably picked this up on a whim because I like Chopin and it is in good condition or perhaps it was at a 25c / record garage sale. I’ll certainly be looking for Turnabout’s in future.
I'll also have to look for some of the other recommendations.
BTW: My Van Cliburn did not seem to me to be a very good example of an RCA and the problems did not seem to be condition related. I preferred the Davidovich and the Argerich.
