Re: Mounting dimensions for Ittok - any one got them?

I'm no distortion expert, really, so I'll leave to others why things have got worse. A more revealing arm? A poorer cart/arm match? No idea. I supposed you have cleaned your stylus...

As to the question of being "correct" with the effective length, you notice that opinions differ, but I'm in the same camp as Brain. :-) You won't get more tracking distortion or other plauges by deviating slightly from the specs. A mounting distance that's wrong on all accounts will reveal itself in an inability to align the cartridge when using some protractor.

The table in the Linn FAQ is based on some unique math, which I would expect to correspond the most with the Enjoy the Music-protractor, since the same person, Rex, was involved in both projects. For a table based on Baerwald geometry, see
http://164.195.100.11/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1='4326283'.WKU.&OS=PN/4326283&RS=PN/4326283
However, some protractor will be enough as long as you are in the "ball-park", as was said.

The Enjoy the Music-protractor is most likely quite accurate in achieving its aims, but it's based on a different geometry than those two Brian mentioned. Baerwald geometry places the inner zero-error point at 66 mm from the spindle centre (sometimes further inwards due to a larger recorded area taken into consideration), which is where an average LP ends. Neither Löfgren nor Enjoy the Music give as much priority to the inner grooves. So a protractor based on Baerwald geometry would give less tracking distortion on the inner grooves (but more elsewhere on the record). Switching to a Baerwald-based protractor could improve things, in that those aspects of the total distortion that relates to the horizontal tracking error will be reduced on the inner grooves. Finding a cheap gauge is another matter...

The differences in tracking distortion isn't huge anyway, and if your problem resides elsewhere (quite likely), it may override the improvements in tracking distortion. So satisfaction is far from guaranteed.
