Re: Back to the drawing board

Good idea! I have done this using solid surface counter top material. I used Wilsonart Gibraltar which is similar to Corian. The material was chosen partly because sink cutout offcuts were available for almost free, the material is heavier than acrylic and seems to have great damping charactersitics (The dissimilar materials making up the product may help with this) I routed a round bottom groove near the circumference and caulked in a 1/4" round "pencil" lead from a fishing supplies shop. Two of these are bolted together with a sound deadening material between them and the lower one is ct out to accomodate a Rega subplatter and belt drive. The result is a platter that is a bit heavier than the standard Planar 3 glass platter, has triple the rotational inertia, and to my ear sounds a lot better than the original glass platter. I dont think that it is important to center the mass with the drive belt but there may be some slight edvantage in getting the height close to the center of the bearing.

PS I envy your machining expertise and access to good tools. I was just working with a router and a drill.
