I see it as similar trying to balance something on the head of a pin. It only needs to be the slightest bit off, it will then move further and things rapidly go downhill from there. Perfectly level is an ideal that can be approximated but not achieved. For normal purposes, an good approximation is plenty good enough but for an unstable system, it is not. Even if perfectly level could be achieved, it would only take slight floor or wall deflection as someone walked past to initiate problems.
