Unbiased truth about HD600s., and a note on Koss Pro4

I liken the HD600s to driving a Mercedes Benz "E" Class. It does everything just right and you know exactly where you are with them, but ultimately they are a bit boring. You can get special cables for them (like having the AMG version) but that puts you in electrostatic price area (Porsche etc.)

The HD 600 sounds very similar tonally to my speakers, which is a positive thing, but they lack the air an ambience that headphones always lack, and there is nothing anyone can do about that.

If I could go back 5 years and make the decision, would I buy them again? The answer is yes, but only to complete my collection. Will I be buying the HD650s? Only if a set come up cheap.

Out of my dozen or so sets of headphones I have my likes and dislikes to every set, but about 8 times out of 9 when I pick up a set to listen it is a set of Beyer Dynamics

Now, I agree with what the guy said about the Koss Pro4s. I have a set of 70s pro4AAs and got replacement drivers and ear pads, and the replacements sound horrible compared to the originals. Interestingly, the originals sound horrible compared to a set of Superex SM350s I have from the same era. The Superex are miles behind today's headphones in the clarity stakes but they pump out bass like few cans can. They were a real star of the seventies.

Cheers!
