Re: No dead animals here

The lower end of that price range is the basic LP-12, pretty much in it's original 1972 form.

Several power supplies are available. The Valhalla is the first step up from the basic unit. It is an inboard crystal driven electronic speed control. It is still a one-speed table

Outboard units include the Lingo (Linn), Armageddon (Naim), and the Pink Linnk (Pink Triangle). All of these turn the Linn into a 2-speed table (33 and 45). The Pink Linnk requires a new top plate because it relocates the drive pulley assembly. As you might imagine, each has it's adherents. All are a definite improvement over the Valhalla.

The Cirkus is a new bearing assembly. I believe it is standard on all new, fully tricked out Linns. Again some prefer the old bearing, some like the Cirkus.

The Trampolin is an alternate bottm panel that was designed to provide better isolation for those who must place their tables on regular furniture. It degrades performance on isolation stands or shelves and many Linn dealers would only sell it to cutomers that fir the use description.

IMNSHO, the best arm on the Linn is the Graham 2.0L. The Ekos is an excellent arm when paired with the Archiv cartridge. The Ittok was designed to mate with the Troika. Both of these are LOMCs. My earlier advice on the arm on the table and your Grado still stands. I would use something like the OLRB250 with that combo.

My Linn is currently Cirkus'd and Lingo'd. The arm is the Graham (which replaced the Ekos and was a major step-up) If you buy a Linn (or any suspended table) start saving your nickels for the Mana Shelf. The Reference shelf is ~ $610 from Flat Earth Audio. It is a phenomenal platform for the Linn. Really tightens up the bass and gets rid of the mid-bass hump that shows up in some systems. Thorsten has done a DIY version, so you might want to look into that.

The link below goes over the production history of the LP-12 and should pretty well take care of most of your question.

BTW, does your dealer know how to set-up a Linn? This is critical to the performance of the table. If he doesn't, find someone who does or get the article on setup from Listener Vol3, No 3, Summer '97. You'll want to learn how to do it yourself anyway. Oh, and even if you don't go for the Mana shelf immediately, get a Mana spirit level. it's around $50 and fits over the spindle of the platter. makes leveling the suspension so much easier.
