Re: Is the Grado Black considerably inferior to the Shure M97 and Pickering XV-15/625E?

A great deal of this stuff is based on emotions, taste and personal preferences. The Grado's popularity is based on some folks preference
for it's mid range tonal qualities but over-all I'd say the Grado is
a Pinto and the Shure is a Porsche, the Shure is one of the best trackers of any cartridge, the Grado is closer to the other side of the scale, the Grado has some viscous black goop as part of it's proprietary suspension some folks will buy a grado and shelve it for up to a year to preclude the infamous Grado dance, and the grado's suspension will harden up in a few years.
The Shure is also pretty much flat across the audible range.
I think the grado's were truly unique and a compelling bargain back in the day when Joe grado was the man, I think now they are kind of cruising along on the old name and reputation.
OTOH the Grado black will definately get the involuntary toes and finger tapping thing going, and ultimaterly that what this stuff is all about enjoying the music.
