Re: Rega mat and VTA

Hi Bill

It occurs to me that the change in sound you heard is consistent with a change in VTA from raising the platter if nothing else was changed.

Even if there is no change in VTA,(say an equivalent thickness spacer under the arm) It is possible that some people will prefer it and some will not, depending upon the rest of their system, the music they like their individual hearing and their individual preferences.

I have only heard this approach on two turntables. One is my Planar 3 with SME Series IIIs arm and the other was a friends P3 with RB250 arm and Audio Note rewire. Both I and my friend prefer it, perceiving the sound as both clearer and easier on the ear but other people's rigs and perceptions may be different.

Some possible good reasons for Rega not doing it are:
1 Every extra piece adds to complexity and cost.
2 If using an O ring, placement takes care. As it has to be done by the user, Rega could see this as a problem.
3 It may sometimes be an improvement and sometimes not, depending upon the cartridge and other factors.
4 Some people may prefer it and others may not.

Fortunately this approach is virtually free and easily reversible so people can readily try for themselves.

Regards

David
